Location
Cairo is the capital of Egypt, a country found on the northeast corner of Africa with Europe to the north and the Middle East to the east. It is a large bustling city of around 10 million people.
Kid-Friendliness?
Cairo has all the advantages and disadvantages of a big city. Walking around the downtown area near the Egyptian Museum is full of busy roads but walkable with many sidewalks and very easy to get on/off the metro. Once outside the downtown area, the suburbs have easy uber service and the shopping malls have all the amenities you would need for children. It is extremely hot in the desert climate, so stopping to buy water and fruit shakes is important for kids to stay hydrated.
Famous Landmark
You can’t talk about Cairo without thinking of the Great Pyramids.
Shopping
The center of the city (near the Egyptian Museum) is filled with touristy shops selling all sorts of trinkets and memorabilia. For an extensive souvenir shopping experience, you can head to the Egyptian Museum gift shop. For shopping outside of the tourist gifts and souvenirs, head to one of the many malls around the greater city area. They are easily accessible by Uber or inDrive.
Green Space
As Cairo is in the middle of a desert, it’s hard to find green space amongst the sand. However, there are a few areas that have been transformed. One of those is across from the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization called Fustat Park.
Kid Activity
All the main tourist attractions are exciting for kids – the pyramids, the Egyptian Museum, the Royal Mummies Hall. There are also many kid activities found at the malls. For example, Mall of Egypt has Ski Egypt, an indoor ski experience, and Cairo Festival City Mall has Bounce, a trampoline park.
