Explore Bangkok with Kids- 3 Different Budget Options

Are you looking for a fancy vacation with your family in Bangkok?  Or one where you made it to Bangkok but don’t have a baht left for attractions?  We’ve put together a list for ANY budget type!  While this list is not exhaustive (in a city of over 10 million people, that’s not possible), we have listed our favorites from around the city!

The High-End List

Activities costing B750+ for a full day or B350+ for a single session are found in this list.  These attractions are sure to keep your kids entertained and not wanting to leave!

Kidzania

A complete indoor experience for children, Kidzania allows children to explore what adult life is like in a city.  They are given a debit card with “kidzo” currency when they enter the world and then they have the option to try different jobs or use their money for special activities and shopping.  Each job kids are outfitted with uniforms and then taught the basics of the job with hands-on experience.  All jobs are created from companies in Thailand, which also adds a cultural dimension to a fun full-day experience!

Sea Life Bangkok is an aquarium that takes up an entire floor of a mall – the basement floor!  The entrance is located below the Siam Paragon food court in downtown Bangkok.  The aquarium houses sea creatures from all over the world, as well as otters, penguins, and several reptile species.  There are activities to attend, such as animal feedings, which keep the kids busy moving from one area of the aquarium to another.  Expect to spend many hours here!

Playsquare Laser Tag

Found in Central World, the largest mall in downtown Bangkok, laser tag is a great game for the older kids.  In laser tag, you use a laser gun to try to shoot your opponents.  You run and hide to stop your opponents from finding you and shooting at you. At Playsquare Laser Tag, you can stay for only one game to try it out or pay the ‘buffet’ price to stay.

The Budget-Friendly List

Activities costing between B200 to B700 for a full day of fun are found in this list.

Ancient City

On the southern side of the city, The Ancient City is a fantastic place to visit for someone who is wanting to get an overview of Thailand.  The Ancient City is an educational experience where one can learn about all the different regions of Thailand.  You can either pay to drive through, or rent transportation such as a bicycle or golf cart.  It is best to go ahead and have some sort of transportation other than walking as it is a large area to cover and kids can easily get tired out while exploring the site.  The Ancient City is full of replicas, some large and some small, of famous things throughout Thailand.  It is very educational and worth a trip with children.  The restaurant in the Ancient City is built over water and is a fun experience with authentic Thai food options to try as well.

Blu-O Bowling

A fun event for the whole family, there are bowling alleys found in different malls around the city.  When you enter the bowling alley, you sign up for a lane and input your names into the register.  Then you go to the shoe rental spot and find your bowling shoe size.  After you all put on your bowling shoes, you can find the balls that fit each member of your family and take them to your lane.  Once at your lane, you can order food and drink to enjoy while you bowl.  If you want to play only one game, you stop and pay after that one game.  Or you can continue to bowl and it will automatically start your next game.

*Family tips: Bring socks for every member of your family.  There are special bowling aids for young children such as putting up bumpers, so the ball doesn’t go into the gutter and using a bowling ramp to slide the ball onto the lane.

The Shoestring Budget

Activities costing less than B200 a day are found in this list with many of them being free!

Yoyo Land

YoYo land is another indoor playground for children.  This attraction is found on the east side of the city in Seacon Square Mall.  I would recommend it for children elementary-age or younger.  It costs one price to enter and stay for the whole day.  Lots of options for rides and even an indoor roller coaster.  For the price, this is a real hidden gem!

Children’s Discovery Museum

To the north of the city, the Children’s Discovery Museum sits next to the famous Chatuchak Market.  This is a large space for children to run around, play, and learn.  With a splash pad, playground equipment, and dinosaur bones area, children can spend a lot of time outdoors.  Indoors, they can explore floors of different science topics.

Chatuchak

Found directly across from the Children’s Discovery Museum, Chatuchak Weekend Market is not known as a child destination.  However, children can enjoy this crazy busy labyrinth of alleyways along with their parents.  There are many sections that have unique items for sale like the exotic pet section.  Combined with the Discovery Museum, Chatuchak is a fun destination during the weekend!

Kids Bike Park

In the area surrounding Suvarnabhumi Airport a green space has been created.  Bikers can ride on different paths around the area.  There is a special area for the children.  If your children love to bike or you have several hours to wait before a flight, this is a great place to come to get some exercise!

Mega Park at MegaBangna

On the southeastern side of the city there is a large mall called Megabangna.  The area around the mall has been built up and is now called Mega City.  You can find many attractions in that area for kids.  Since it has built up, MegaBangna has created an outdoor oasis.  This includes walkways through green space, fountains, playground, and basketball court.  Kids can run free and let all that energy loose.  They can also splash in the fountains or bike around the pathways.

Science Center for Education (Planetarium)

Downtown Bangkok has a set of buildings created with different science learning in mind.  There are several different buildings, each with a different purpose.  A planetarium, a small aquarium, and a hands-on science museum.  Across the street there are several floors more – a paleontology floor and a younger children’s exploration space.  With young children, it is easy to spend several hours here.  Older children may go through the museums at a faster pace.  Definitely worth a look if your children enjoy science museums and you have a few hours around downtown Bangkok.

Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium

A fun excursion into a butterfly dome, kids can walk through vegetation and look for butterflies, chrysalis, and eggs. They have a small museum attached with examples of what each stage of the butterfly life cycle looks like to help children visualize what they are looking for.  Fruit is hung around so that the kids can see butterflies landing to eat the fruit.

Other shoestring budget ideas around the city

Search around Google maps near the area you are staying for nearby parks around the city such as Kings Park (Suan Luang Rama IX) on the east side and Lumpini in the center of the city. Or go to the nearest malls like Megabangna or IconSiam. If you are on the shoestring budget IconSiam is perfect for looking around and enjoying the beautiful sights, not for buying.

Concluding Thoughts

Bangkok is a wonderful city to explore with children no matter your budget.  A couple other good options to look into when trying to find something to do with your littles is to look for parks around the city.  They are places to relax amongst the traffic and tall buildings surrounding them.  Two mentionables are Lumpini Park and King Rama IX Park (locals call it King’s Park). Lumpini is in the heart of Bangkok between the Silom and Lumpini MRT stations and off the Sala Daeng BTS stop.  King’s Park is on the east side of Bangkok and most accessible by the Suan Luang Rama IX BTS stop.  Both of these parks are spacious with kids’ playgrounds and loads of greenery and walking trails.

Enjoy Bangkok!  Take your time, find attractions within your budget and learn more about this wonderful city!
